Some of the very fascinating studies in the previous couple of years, carried out at Yale University, found that mindfulness meditation reduces action in the default mode network (DMN), the brain network responsible for mind wandering and self-referential ideas – a.k.a., “monkey mind.” The DMN is active when we have wandering thoughts and are not thinking about anything in particular.

Since wandering of the mind is usually connected with not being happy; thinking about the past and worrying about the future, many people tend to dial this down. Several researches show that meditation via its calming effect on the DMN, seems to do this.

More still, when the mind does begin to wander, due to the forming of the new connections, meditators know how to snap back out of it.
